Union Structure

The beauty industry has flourished in Hong Kong for many years and has weathered many storms — in recent years they have come wave after wave. The Trade Descriptions Ordinance, government legislation regulating beauty devices, and contract cooling-off periods have all hit the industry hard, and none of these policies was fully consulted on with the industry before implementation, leaving practitioners caught off guard. So that the beauty industry can develop in stability, the Union was formally founded earlier this year, determined to speak up for the industry — so that the authorities better understand and value it, its standing is raised further, and it receives fairer treatment.

Many passionate people have spoken up for the beauty industry over the years, but they were not beauty industry members themselves and could not fully voice our needs and our heart. It is therefore necessary to form an alliance of beauty practitioners ourselves, to speak for ourselves, and to communicate with the government directly to express our demands. Past policies caught the industry off guard because communication fell short; the Union will strive to be the bridge between the two sides — talking things through, understanding and respecting each other.

Another important mission of the Union is to raise the quality and image of industry services. We are preparing to launch the Quality Beauty Merchant Certification Scheme — a certification scheme of real authority and credibility. To earn this certification is a great affirmation of a merchant's products and services, and this 'gold-lettered signboard' is sure to draw customers from far and wide. The Union will also establish a Beauty Industry Mediation Centre to mediate and resolve disputes between merchants and customers. In recent years, inaccurate reporting has been all too common in the media — some outlets exaggerate and even distort facts to attract readers, and when a customer's complaint about a beauty salon reaches them, it often mutates and leaves merchants wrongly blamed. So that the industry receives fair and objective commentary, the Mediation Centre will resolve disputes between merchants and customers fairly and peacefully — putting merchants at ease and leaving customers satisfied.

The Union is the representative of Hong Kong's entire beauty industry. Beyond these schemes, the Union will plan more activities and programmes to benefit the industry and serve it wholeheartedly. The Union is also the symbol of the unity of all beauty practitioners. I firmly believe that through unity the industry will keep advancing, win the support of the authorities and the wider public, and flourish day by day. I also hope every practitioner keeps up the beautiful mission of providing the finest service. 'Your beauty, our mission.' A client's beauty is our mission. May we strive without cease for perfection, and may every client who experiences our industry's services be satisfied, healthy and beautiful!
